Auto Insurance - Does Vehicle Size Matter for Costs?

Selecting auto insurance for your vehicle is a very personal decision. Many factors play a role in the cost of a plan. Most of those factors surround the driver.

However, the type of vehicle owned makes a difference as well. SUVs, which are typically larger vehicles, may cost a bit more to insure than smaller cars. However, there are many other considerations here.

Value Plays a Role Young happy woman showing the key of new car
One of the biggest factors in the cost of car insurance is the value of the car. The more valuable the vehicle is, the more risk is present for the insurer. This often means a higher policy price.

A new SUV may cost $25,000 but you can buy a small car for under $12,000. Now, this comparison only goes so far. There are many sports cars and other high-end vehicles that could be worth well more than $25,000. The value of the individual car matters. These cars cost more to repair and more to replace if an accident occurs.

Use Matters Too
How you use the vehicle can impact how much you pay for auto insurance. For example, some SUVs are commonly used as off-roading vehicles. This can mean a higher risk of an accident. This often raises the insurance cost.

At the same time, some smaller cars could be a bit more expensive to insure if they are sports vehicles. That's because sport vehicle owners tend to drive these cars at a higher rate of speed.

Finding the Right Policy Matters
Size does matter in vehicles. However, it is often possible to find ways to reduce car insurance costs no matter the type of vehicle.

If you purchase an SUV and you want to keep costs lower, select a vehicle with enhanced security. Choose one that features anti-lock brakes. Don't use it in risky conditions. The same is true for smaller cars. To keep costs down, be a good driver. This is the biggest factor in determining how much you will pay.

It is important to consider all of the options available to you from multiple insurers. Take the time to find discounts and rewards. These can significantly reduce your insurance costs. Your independent insurance agent is more than willing to help.

And, buy the car that is right for your needs. Generally, size only plays a small role in the overall cost of car insurance.
